Whidborne Avenue, Torquay

The existing house occupied an elevated position with far reaching views across Torbay, but the internal layout failed to make the most of its location. The brief was to remodel the property, create additional accommodation and establish a stronger connection between the internal living spaces, the garden and the surrounding views.

The design includes a series of carefully integrated extensions and alterations, including a new entrance, contemporary rear extensions, a generous roof terrace and two feature dormers that create additional first floor accommodation while giving the property a distinctive new appearance. The material palette combines white render, natural slate, standing seam metal cladding and slim aluminium glazing to provide a clean contemporary aesthetic that complements the original building.

Internally, the house has been extensively reconfigured to provide bright, open living spaces that are both practical and flexible. A new vaulted dining space forms the heart of the home, with full height gable glazing and large sliding doors flooding the interior with natural light while framing views of the garden beyond. Elsewhere, the first floor layout has been redesigned to create spacious bedrooms, including a principal suite that opens directly onto the roof terrace and takes advantage of the property’s elevated outlook.
