Frensham House, Brixham

Frensham House is the sensitive refurbishment and remodelling of a former residential care home in Brixham, creating a specialist home for adults living with Prader Willi Syndrome. Co Create Architects was appointed to lead the design and delivery of the transformation, repurposing an existing building into a safe, welcoming and therapeutic environment that supports both residents and care staff.

The Brief
Following the closure of the former elderly care home, our client sought to create a specialist residential facility designed specifically for people living with Prader Willi Syndrome.

The brief required a complete internal transformation that balanced residents’ independence with carefully managed safety measures, whilst providing a calm, domestic environment that feels like home rather than an institution.

Designing for people living with Prader Willi Syndrome requires careful consideration of how the built environment influences wellbeing, independence and daily routines.

The refurbishment creates a setting that encourages dignity and independence while supporting safe care practices. Layout, circulation and communal spaces have all been designed to promote positive interaction and provide residents with an environment that feels familiar, secure and comfortable.

By reusing the existing building, the project reduced demolition waste and embodied carbon while preserving an established building within the local community. The result is a modern specialist care facility that meets contemporary standards without the environmental impact of new construction.
