Mortuary Facility, Torbay Hospital
Co Create Architects have been commissioned to design and develop a new purpose built mortuary facility at Torbay Hospital in Torquay, Devon. Torbay Hospital is part of the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and serves as a key acute care centre for over 286,000 residents. The redevelopment includes a modern mortuary, administrative areas and facilities for staff and visiting families, reflecting the Trust’s commitment to compassionate healthcare provision.

Mortuary Facilites
The new mortuary space is designed to elevate dignity, hygiene, and operational efficiency. Our design integrates spacious preparation rooms, cold storage, bereavement suites, and staff welfare areas. The design is contemporary yet respectful of the hospital’s existing fabric, combining clean lines, natural materials, and tailored lighting to promote a calm and comforting atmosphere during emotionally challenging moments.
Torbay Hospitals Masterplan
Situated within Torbay Hospital’s expanding masterplan – which includes recent critical care, endoscopy, and surgical unit upgrades – the mortuary facility reinforces the Trust’s ongoing investment in healthcare infrastructure. As architects with deep experience in healthcare design across South Devon, we prioritise patient care, staff wellbeing, and regulatory compliance. Our work on this project exemplifies Co Create Architects’ dedication to delivering high‑quality, sensitive, and functional healthcare buildings in the Devon region.
