Downhayne Kennels, Devon
Co Create Architects were appointed to design a new purpose built dog boarding facility on a greenfield site in rural Devon. The project involves the redevelopment of the Downhayne Kennels site to provide two new kennel buildings, supporting the long term growth and professionalisation of the business. The new layout consolidates operations, enhances animal welfare standards, and provides a more efficient and welcoming environment for both staff and clients.

The Scheme
The scheme includes two contemporary kennel buildings, carefully arranged within the landscape to make the best use of the site’s topography and views. Each building provides secure and comfortable boarding spaces, with integrated services and welfare facilities. On-site staff accommodation has been incorporated to ensure 24-hour care and oversight. Generous outdoor spaces and exercise areas are provided, all surrounded by a native wildflower garden to promote biodiversity and a calm, natural environment for the animals.
Sustainable Architecture
The design takes a low impact, sustainable approach, using natural materials and energy-efficient systems to minimise the environmental footprint of the development. The buildings are nestled into the rural Devon landscape, framed by wildflower meadows that enhance ecology and visual appeal. The overall scheme reflects our commitment to thoughtful rural architecture balancing functionality, sustainability, and the wellbeing of both people and animals.
