Centre for Imagination, Theatre Alibi
As architects specialising in creative and community-led design, Co Create Architects are proud to be delivering pro bono support for the transformation of Emmanuel Hall in Exeter. This much-loved heritage building has been the home of Theatre Alibi since 1982. Our design approach retains the building’s historical character while introducing essential upgrades that enhance accessibility, sustainability and long-term functionality.

Connected Community Space
Our architectural masterplan tackles longstanding challenges within the existing structure through carefully considered extensions and spatial redesign. Key elements include a fully reconfigured main entrance, designed to be prominent, welcoming and step-free. Inside, we are redesigning the main circulation routes to improve flow, visibility and connection across the building. A new community café, Café Alibi, will provide a light filled and adaptable hub for informal gatherings, creative collaboration and social engagement. These enhancements support Theatre Alibi’s mission to deliver inspiring and inclusive experiences in a space tailored to its young audiences.
Inclusive Multi-Use Spaces
In line with our wider work across Exeter, Plymouth and the South West, we are integrating outdoor and multifunctional areas that respond to both setting and community need. Our proposal introduces a new community garden and covered external spaces, echoing the form of the existing roof while enabling year round use for workshops, performances and play. Internally, multi use performance areas will be redesigned for flexibility and comfort, providing seamless transitions between audience, performer and participant. This is a project that places imagination at its core and we are honoured to be helping Theatre Alibi realise their future vision through innovative, community focused design.
