Bovey Cottage, Devon
Set within a conservation area in rural Devon, this project involved the careful removal of an unsympathetic extension and the delivery of a contemporary new living space. The design responds to the traditional form of the existing house, while introducing a refined modern language through a palette of honest materials and clean lines. The new volume houses an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, wrapped in slim-profile glazing that opens the interior to the garden and surrounding views.

The Design
Internally, the space is defined by a vaulted ceiling with exposed oak trusses and skylights that flood the room with natural light. New window openings have been sensitively introduced throughout the original house to improve daylight and connection to the landscape, while respecting the character of the existing fabric. A full internal refurbishment was carried out, with each room reimagined to suit modern living while retaining a sense of heritage.
Landscaping
Externally, a new landscaping scheme knits the house and garden together, softening the architectural edges with layered planting and informal stonework. The material choices – including lime render, natural slate, and dark metal cladding – reflect the local vernacular while offering a quiet contrast to the existing building. This project strikes a balance between restoration and renewal, drawing on the context to create a considered, characterful family home.
