Cove Barn, South Hams
We recently completed the full refurbishment of Cove Barn, a Grade II listed property in the hamlet of Lower Soar, near Marlborough and Salcombe in South Devon. Working within the sensitive setting of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our role included securing Listed Building Consent, developing the technical design, and managing the works on site through to completion in collaboration with Culmex Construction.

The History
Working from careful research into the building’s history, including mapping that traces the outbuildings back to at least 1884, we embraced the layered story of the farmhouse and its agricultural setting. The 17th-century origins, later additions, and 20th-century alterations all informed our approach. Externally, the rear lean-to roof was reconstructed, retaining its original pitch and silhouette while renewing the structure beneath and inserting large glazing to maximise the coastal views. Existing slates were salvaged and reused wherever possible, preserving the beautiful weathered character that defines the barn from afar.

The Internal Space
Internally, the full refurbishment brings warmth, cohesion and quiet confidence to the spaces. Original features sit comfortably alongside carefully crafted contemporary insertions, creating a home that feels both grounded in its past and tailored for modern living. We led the project from Listed Building Consent through to completion on site, collaborating closely with Culmex Construction to deliver a thoughtful, enduring result for our clients.
