Preston Extension, Paignton

We have designed a single storey rear extension in Paignton, Devon, to support the changing needs of a growing family and their elderly mother. The project focuses on improving accessibility, comfort and day to day living by carefully adapting the existing home. Our aim was to create a practical yet uplifting space that supports mobility while feeling calm and contemporary. The layout has been shaped around ease of movement, generous natural light and clear connections between spaces.

The Concept
The new extension opens up the rear of the property, replacing a series of small, disconnected rooms with a spacious open plan kitchen, dining and living area. Full width glazing and large sliding doors create a strong link to the garden, allowing light to flood into the home throughout the day. The level threshold between inside and outside provides seamless access for all members of the family. This visual and physical connection brings a sense of openness and calm, allowing the garden to become a natural extension of the living space.
The Design Externally
The garden itself is being re-landscaped to complement the new layout. Gently sloping paths and level areas ensure ease of movement, while planting and seating zones create a pleasant and relaxing setting. These outdoor spaces are designed to be enjoyed throughout the year, whether for quiet moments, family gatherings or simply the enjoyment of nature from within the home.
The Design Internally
Internally, the project includes a full refurbishment of the existing property. The interior design focuses on comfort, warmth and simplicity, using natural materials and soft tones to create a sense of unity. The new extension forms the heart of the home, offering generous shared spaces that promote togetherness while still allowing moments of independence. The result is a carefully considered home that balances practical needs with a feeling of openness, connection and light.
