The Black Box Showcase on The Architects Journal

Despite its size, this carefully crafted extension delivers a functional workspace for the client whilst unlocking the layout of their existing home.

Co Create Architects’ project, The Black Box, has been featured on the Architects Journal website as part of their building library. The Architects Journal is a highly respected publication within the architectural industry, providing news, analysis, and expert opinion on architecture and design.

The Black Box is a unique architectural statement that addresses a number of key issues. The client’s brief was to create a design that addressed the leaking flat roof and establish first floor access to the garden that would not compromise the light within the utility space below. Co Create Architects achieved this by designing a north-facing structure that flows light throughout the space with the introduction of a rooflight, solar tubes, and an internal glass floor that transmits light to the utility space below.

What makes The Black Box stand out is its unique form, which sits elegantly alongside the once thatched property, appearing both independent and connected to the host dwelling. The project provides value for money not by volume, but by addressing the client’s specific needs and desires. At nearly £8,000 a square meter, the project was made so successful by the passion that was brought to the design from the client, contractor, and architect.

Co Create Architects, Plymouth, worked closely with the local contractor on site throughout the construction period to ensure a high quality of workmanship. The project is hidden in the Teign Valley, Devon and is embedded within the conservation area adjacent to surrounding listed buildings. It takes its material influence from the local neighbouring agricultural outbuildings, with the use of charred larch, zinc roofing, and black framed glazing.

Sustainability was an essential consideration of the design. The entirety of the frame was constructed from timber, which was a conscious gesture to minimize the embodied carbon on the build. The charred larch cladding was locally sourced and was hand scorched on site, providing not only reduced emissions but a considered locality to the craft of “The Black Box.”
